Using Paint Colors that Add Spice to Your Space

When selecting paint colors, just as with any other design element, start by determining how you want the room to feel.  That feeling is the basis of your style.

The key in paint, just as in fashion, is to choose classic colors that will provide a versatile neutral backdrop to which other layers (furniture, rugs, pillows, window coverings, plants, etc.) can be added to define the ensemble. Neutrals can be pale, muted or rich bold colors. Whites and beiges are available in hundreds of shades from cool to warm tones that are as capable of creating visual impact and depth as are colors.

Express Your Style through Paint Color

Use a base or primer coat to prep the walls and ceiling for your new color. However, to help the primer adhere better onto the walls, remember to clean your walls by wiping away any dust, dirt or oils with a dry or wet cloth. Primer fills in minor wall surface flaws and covers over previous paint colors and marks making it easier to get a truer final paint color using fewer coats of your paint choice.

A good rule of thumb is to paint the ceiling two shades lighter than the walls; the trim a contrasting color to the walls. But keep an open mind. If you find your color samples are not quite what you had in mind, move onto the next.
