Make the most out of small spaces

  • Purge
One of the biggest enemies of design is clutter—especially when space is at a premium! (Are you noticing a trend?) Take an honest assessment of your space and purge anything that is not absolutely essential to meet your style requirements. You will be amazed at how much clarity this brings.
  • Identify the Focal Point
Is it the fireplace, the view, the television, the conversations that will take place? Arrange furnishings around this focal point making sure to take into account good circulation around the furniture and to other rooms. If there isn’t a focal point, create one. Purchase a fireplace surround or an oversize frame (with or without a mirror or art work), to lean against a wall. Keep your mind open and be creative.
  • Paint
Convention has taught that light colors maximize small spaces; this sentiment no longer holds true. Rich colors add depth to small spaces and provide the perfect backdrop for textured and patterned fabrics on windows, furniture and accessories.

Bathrooms Upgrades on a Budget

Install Window Coverings

Maximize light and privacy with simple and airy curtains. Also consider bamboo or other natural fiber options that add texture and interest. If curtains are not your style, try window films that can offer privacy in a variety of translucent options or can be designed by you to resemble art glass. Films are simple to apply and can be removed easily when your mood changes.

Decorating
Adding framed art work and photos personalizes your bathroom. Hang framed mirrors in various sizes, stencil your favorite poems for whimsical, graphic appeal, and add a small plant or two in understated containers. But remember, less is more. Don’t go overboard with candles and knick knacks that clutter and appear cliché. Opt for a single textured, woven, or braided rug rather than matching fuzzy bath accessories.

Wall finishes
Consider installing crown molding at the ceiling line and a chair rail at the height of the towel bars to add character and definition to the space. Adding a thin trim piece 8”- 12” below the ceiling line or crown creates the perfect backdrop for a stencil border edge above. Adding a bead board wainscoting to the wall below the chair rail evokes a light and airy.

Best ways Beautify your Kitchen

Kitchens are now revered as the heart of the home. Their split personalities include informal dining area, homework station, office, even party central. While kitchen renovations can be among the costliest, small and midrange upgrades make a strong impact on a reduced budget. Creating ample work space and storage are key to any successful kitchen renovation.  Functionality trumps flash, but new energy efficient appliances and sleek faucets are as beautiful as they are functional. Myriad counter and flooring materials and paints offer easy transformation options for any budget.

Go Green Guide

Get a Low-Flush Toilet:

Toilets, on average, are the single largest water wasters inside a house.  Older models can use up to five times as much water as newer versions.  Cut back on your water consumption by installing an ultra-low-flush toilet.

Save in The Shower:

Along with toilets and washing machines, showers can be real water guzzlers.  A low-flow showerhead is comfortable and stylish!

Consider a Tankless Water Heater:

One way to help the environment and wait less for the water to heat up on a bitter cold morning—a tankless water heater.  It helps you save energy and water and reduce carbon dioxide emissions!  Not to mention the extra storage space you’ll gain where the water heater once resided!
