San Cristobal de las Casas

Tucked away in the highlands of Chiapas lies the city of San Cristobal de las Casas. The area is covered in a myriad of plant life. The Huitepec Ecological reserve provides a convenient excursion into the natural surroundings. The reserve is comprised of two distinct zones at the foot of an extinct volcano. There is a sign-posted trail that gives the names and descriptions of the numerous flora as well as details of their cultural use; many plants have medicinal purposes. The lush vegetation, thick green carpets of moss and fern give way to a cloud forest that is simply awe-inspiring.

Besides the breathtaking scenery, one of the most striking aspects about this city is the strong Mayan presence. Around one million Maya inhabit Chiapas and San Cristobal de las Casas is home to many Mayan villages. These villages have managed to preserve their own unique customs, beliefs, rituals, laws and even languages.

Around San Cristobal, you will find natives selling their goods in small stands: brightly colored belts and cloths, little dolls, and other trinkets. Mayan textiles tend to be the most sought after because of the exuberant designs and extraordinary craftsmanship. Amber jewelry and pottery is also produced locally.

With its cool temperatures, rich indigenous culture and history, and stunning landscape, San Cristobal is a great summer destination.
