Visit the Frida Kahlo Museum

For a unique travel experience with a historical twist, consider visiting the Frida Kahlo Museum, also known as La Casa Azul. Located in Coyoacan, a suburb of Mexico City, the museum is hidden behind high blue walls. It is the actual house where surrealist artist Kahlo was born, grew up and later lived with her muralist husband Diego Rivera until she died. After her death in 1954, Rivera gave the house with all of its contents to the Mexican people. La Casa Azul opened up as a museum four years later.

You are free to tour the inside of the colonial-style house. Check out the courtyard and a multitude of rooms, including the living room, the dining room and kitchen, the master bedroom, the library and Kahlo’s studio. Once inside there are all kinds of treasures to behold: Frida’s colorful Tehuana costumes and jewelry, her diary, masks, giant paper-mache Judas figures, and much, much more.

This museum is unique not only for the number of paintings left behind—it is, after all, a gallery containing some of Frida’s latest work, including family portraits, self-portraits and some still life pieces—but because of the collection of personal items that remain. This museum provides a window, a glimpse into the lives of these two artists that you can’t get anywhere else. It is truly a fascinating experience.
